Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale by revolutionizing the way we develop new materials and devices.
APPLICATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
Linings of silver nanoparticles are being used in many manufactured goods for their disinfecting qualities. Some of these manufactured goods being refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Sportswear, baby pacifiers, storage containers, and laundry detergents are some other items made with the use of silver nanoparticles.
Silver nanoparticles are bateriostatic, which means that they limit the growth of bacteria. Most applications of silver nanoparticles are being found in antibacterial agents in water treatments, bioengineering, electronics, and silver-based consumer products. Samsung has also created a material called Silver Nano, that included silver nanoparticles in many household appliances.
USES OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES In Medicine:
One of the uses of nanotechnology in today’s life is in medicine.
Nanotechnology has been used to get rid of cancerous cells in mice.
To do this they used nanoparticles soaked with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel, which attacked only the cancerous cells and not the nearby healthy cells.
Nanotechnology also has helped restore the sight in hamsters whose nerves were severed.
To bridge the gap in the hamster’s nerve nanostructures were used.
Both of these are helpful uses of nanostructures and could be helpful to humans after tests, to even help stroke victims recover.
Nanotechnology can even lead to life extension since it helps repair or reproduce damaged tissue.
In Construction:
With the use of nanotechnology in construction, it helps make it faster, cheaper, and safer.
Nanotechnology can be used in steel to improve the different properties of steel.
The addition of copper nanoparticles decreases the surface of steel to help limit the chance of cracking or stress risers.
Advancements in nanotechnology using nanoparticles leads to more efficient materials for construction and also leads to increased safety.
Another application of nanoparticles is fire-protective glass and the exterior surface of glass buildings. Nanoparticles are used for this so that light and heat shining through the windows will be prevented.
ONE DRAWBACK TO SILVER NANOPARTICLES
Although silver nanoparticles limit the growth of bacteria, they can be detrimental to the environment.
One drawback to using silver nanoparticles is it can destroy helpful bacteria used to get rid of ammonia from treatment systems of waste water.
When the silver nanoparticles are released in water it can be harmful to the purity of the water.
